This May, the Ice Hockey World Championship is set to take place in the Czech Republic – a perfect destination for Latvian fans to embark on an exciting road trip. To ensure a smooth journey without car troubles, Edgars Korzāns, Balcia's Motor Products Manager, shares crucial tips for preparing your car and what essentials to bring along.
Get your car ready for the road
A car primarily used for city driving will face additional stress on a long journey, especially if you're heading to hilly areas. “Before you hit the road, schedule a visit to your mechanic for a thorough check-up and necessary maintenance,” advises Edgars Korzāns. Additionally, if you’ll be driving on European highways, check your tires' speed rating. Exceeding this speed can reduce grip and lead to dangerous situations.
Must-have items for your trunk
To handle minor issues on the road, pack essential items like a one-liter container of motor oil, antifreeze, and basic tools such as screwdrivers and pliers. Ensure your car includes a first aid kit, emergency triangle, and a reflective vest – mandatory in several European countries if you need to be outside your vehicle.
“If your car doesn’t have a spare tire, carry tire repair foam to fix punctures. Flat tires are a common issue on road trips. If you have CASCO insurance, contact your insurer for roadside assistance, local repair help, and compensation for any damages. Our coverage also includes hotel stays, vehicle transport, and taxi costs, as well as protection against theft from your car or roof box. To prevent theft, never leave valuables like laptops, phones, tablets, or wallets visible in your car,” adds Edgars Korzāns.
Plan your route smartly
Before departure, plan your route and save it on your navigation app or device to avoid stress on the road. Try to avoid driving through major cities during rush hours to save time and fuel. Also, check for any roadworks along your route, as they could significantly extend your travel time.
Keep the journey entertaining
While planning your trip, consider ways to keep yourself and your passengers entertained. Download music, audiobooks, or podcasts for solo or partner travel. For families with children, bring toys and books like sticker or activity books and magnetic boards. Engage in road trip games, like counting animals or playing word games, and plan short breaks to stretch your legs and explore interesting natural or cultural sites.
With these tips, your road trip to the Ice Hockey World Championship can be enjoyable and hassle-free. Safe travels and enjoy the game!
